Run Python and Java code

Autessa Technical Interviews runs Python 3.12 and Java 21 code in the browser during the interview, with numpy, pandas, Guava, Gson and other common libraries preinstalled.

// the problem

Why run python and java code matters in a coding interview

Reading code is not the same as seeing it work. Without execution, interviews turn into arguments about whether something would compile. Candidates should be able to run their program, read the error, and fix it, just as they would at work.

// how it works

How does run python and java code work?

  1. Press Run

Either person presses Run. The code in the current language runs as a single program on Autessa’s code runner.

  2. Add program input if needed

Open Program input and type what the program reads from standard input, through input() in Python or Scanner in Java.

  3. Watch the timer

The Run button shows how long the program has been running. Programs stop after two minutes.

  4. Read the result together

Standard output, errors, the exit status and the duration appear in the shared output console for both people.

Every option, in one place

Option
What it does
Python 3.12
Standard library plus sortedcontainers, more-itertools, numpy and pandas.
Java 21
Standard library plus Guava, Apache Commons Lang 3, Apache Commons Collections 4 and Gson. Single file; the first top-level class runs.
Program input
Up to 20,000 characters of standard input per run.
Code size
Up to 100,000 characters per run.
Run limit
Two minutes per program; longer runs show as Timed out.
Run pacing
Very rapid repeated runs get a friendly “wait a few seconds” message.

Can
Interviewers (anyone your company admin gives access to the console)
Run code at any time, including after the candidate has submitted or the link is closed.
Candidate (anyone holding the session link while it is open)

Run Python and Java code: questions

Which languages can I run?

Python 3.12 and Java 21. Each session chooses which of the two are allowed.

Can the program read input?

Yes. Program input passes text to standard input, read with input() in Python or a Scanner in Java.

Can I use numpy or Guava?

Yes. Python has numpy, pandas, sortedcontainers and more-itertools installed; Java has Guava, Apache Commons Lang 3, Apache Commons Collections 4 and Gson.

How long can a program run?

Up to two minutes. After that it is stopped and shown as Timed out in the console and in the run history.
