Is a black box over text a real redaction?

Not on its own. A black shape drawn over live text leaves the words in the file, where copy and paste or search can find them. Autessa Redact flattens every page when it burns, so nothing under a box survives, and rebuilds a searchable text layer from only what is left. Links under a box are removed too.

Security

What happens to the original file?

It is deleted. Once the redacted copy is saved to Drive, Redact deletes the original and every working copy. Unfinished files are cleared after 24 hours, Discard deletes a file immediately, and only people whose role includes Redact can use it. Certifications are on the Trust Center.

Does Autessa Redact work out of the box?

Yes. Redact is ready the day you sign in: upload a file, mark it, burn it and save the clean PDF to Drive. From there you shape it to how your team works in Autessa, with your own quick labels, Drive folders, roles that decide who can redact, and automated pipelines that redact documents as they arrive.

Is a redaction in Autessa Redact permanent?

Yes. Burning flattens every page so nothing under a box survives, then rebuilds a searchable text layer from what is left. The redacted text is removed from the file, not hidden behind a black rectangle that could be lifted off.

Can AI find the personal information for me?

Yes. Click Suggest redactions and AI reads every page for names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, phone numbers, email addresses, postal addresses, account and ID numbers and medical identifiers. Each suggestion shows why it was proposed and stays pending until you accept it, and only accepted suggestions and your own boxes are burned.

Does Autessa Redact work on scanned documents and images?

Yes. Redact opens PNG, JPG, TIFF, BMP, GIF and WebP images and scanned PDFs, and reads the page image so its text can be searched, selected and suggested. Boxes found from the page image are flagged so you can double-check that they cover the text.

How do I redact every occurrence of a name?

Use Find. Type the name, or paste a list of names one per line, and Redact finds every match in the document, shows which are already covered, and marks the ones you check in one step. Patterns find Social Security numbers, phone numbers, emails, dates and card numbers the same way.

What happens to my original file?

It is deleted. The moment the redacted copy is saved to Drive, Redact deletes the original and every working copy. A file you never finish is cleared after 24 hours, and Discard deletes it immediately.

Can Autessa Redact redact video or audio?

The Redact editor handles documents and images. Call recordings are redacted by Autessa Call Redaction (see SecurePass), which removes personal details from the audio and the transcript. Public agencies redacting video and audio for public records requests use Autessa FirstPass.

Who can use Redact?

Anyone whose role has the Redact permission and who can save to at least one Drive. Every built-in Autessa role includes Redact, and a company admin can build a custom role without it.

Can I automate redaction with an API?

Yes. Autessa’s document tools (Extract Text, Detect Patterns, Locate Spans and Burn Redactions) chain into a tool pipeline or script that redacts documents with no one in the editor, and the Call Redaction API does the same for recordings.

What file types and sizes does Redact accept?
