Autessa Accounting · startup accounting software
Real books, every card and live budgets, in one ledger.
Autessa Accounting is accounting software for startups: a double-entry general ledger with card spend management for Mercury and any bank, department budgets that tighten or freeze cards on their own, bills, invoices, reconciliation, month-end close and financial reports. Use it out of the box from day one, and shape it to how your company works in Autessa.
Works with Mercury, or with statements from any bank.
What makes it different
What does Autessa Accounting do that other accounting software does not?
Most accounting software records what happened. Autessa Accounting also checks it, controls it and explains it: statements are proven before import, budgets act on cards, and AI suggests but never decides.
Statement upload (CSV, Excel, PDF)
CSV, Excel and PDF statements from any bank, proven against their own running balance before a row is saved.
Duplicate detection
Two identical $22.14 charges stay two charges. Re-uploading adds nothing.
Budget guardrails
Over budget, the department’s Mercury cards are tightened or frozen, and restored next month.
Agent cards for AI agents
One-job cards for AI agents and trials: allowed merchants, a cap per charge, an expiry date.
Track cards from any bank
Amex, Chase or any bank in the same budgets, with limits watched and alerted on.
AI transaction categorization
AI suggests a category with a reason; a person approves; approval writes a rule.
Transfer and deposit matching
Card payments post once and never count as burn. A founder’s wire is equity, not revenue.
Burn and runway
Runway with the trend beside it, so accelerating burn is never hidden by an average.
Home: what needs you
Home is a ranked to-do list, each item one click from its fix.
Plain-language accounting
“Money out (Debit)”: the owner’s words first, the accounting term beside them.
Product tour
A tour of every screen, from the first charge to the closed month
Accounting is organized the way the money moves: spend comes in, is reviewed, lands in budgets and the books, and comes out as reports.
Spend · for your team and every cardholder
Cards from Mercury and every other bank, in one list
Issue Mercury virtual cards, track the Amex, create agent cards with merchant rules, and let anyone request a card. Cardholders see their own cards, spend and guardrail state; approvers see requests on Home.
- Issue, limit, freeze, reassign, cancel
- Track cards from any bank with limits and alerts
- Agent cards that expire on their own
Bookkeeping
Statements proven against themselves before import
Drop CSV, Excel or PDF statements. Accounting matches each to its account by the last four digits, walks the running balance, and tells you the exact row where the numbers stop adding up.
- One duplicate check for sync and uploads
- Continue with a recorded reason when a bank’s file is wrong
- Use a statement for reconciliation only
Review
One inbox, coded before you open it
Card defaults, then merchant rules, then an AI suggestion with a reason. Approve everything coded automatically at once, or fly through the rest with j, k, a, e and i.
- Remember this: a confirmed category becomes a rule
- Ignore with a reason; the row stays visible
- Category and note written back to Mercury
Budgets
Budgets that act on cards
A grid of departments by month, prefilled from three months of history. At the warning line the owner hears about it; at 100% the department’s Mercury cards are tightened or frozen until next month.
- Budget by category
- Revenue budgets with flipped colors
- Guardrails undo themselves
Payables and receivables
Bills paid through Mercury, invoices cleared by deposits
Record a bill when it arrives and pay it by ACH, check or wire through Mercury. Record invoices as revenue, import them from CSV, and apply matching customer deposits. Products are costed first in, first out.
- Vendors with 1099 tracking
- A/R and A/P aging
- Multi-currency with FX gain or loss
Books and close
A ledger nobody can quietly rewrite
Every entry balances, posted entries are corrected only by reversing entries, and Close refuses to run until nothing is waiting, every transfer is matched and the books balance.
- Journal, recurring and revenue recognition entries
- Bank reconcile to $0.00
- Fix close blockers in place
Reports
Investor-ready statements, and the runway number that matters
Profit and loss, balance sheet, an indirect cash flow statement that ties to the penny, trial balance, budget variance, spend by category, burn and runway, and aging, all exportable to CSV.

Chart of features
Everything in Autessa Accounting, by area
Every area, numbered like a chart of accounts. Each area and each feature has its own page.
How it works
How does a transaction get from the bank to the balance sheet?
Arrives
Mercury syncs every 15 minutes, or you upload a statement from any bank.
Is checked
Statement math is proven and duplicates are caught without losing real charges.
Is coded
Card defaults, then merchant rules, then an AI suggestion.
Is approved
A person approves, edits or ignores it in the review inbox.
Is posted
A balanced entry lands in the ledger, the budgets and every report.
How the books work
Is it real double-entry accounting?
Yes. You pick what the money was for; the balanced entries are built for you. Paying the card bill touches no expense at all: it moves money between two accounts you control, so it is matched once and never counted as burn.
- Posted entries are never edited or deleted
- Voids write reversing entries that stay visible
- Closed months are corrected only by reversal
- Integer cents end to end: no rounding drift

FAQ
Questions founders and finance teams ask
What is Autessa Accounting?
Autessa Accounting is accounting software for startups that combines a double-entry general ledger with spend management. It syncs Mercury, reads statements from any bank, codes every transaction for one-person approval, runs department budgets with automatic card guardrails, records bills and invoices, reconciles, closes the month and produces financial statements.
Does Autessa Accounting work with Mercury?
Yes. With a Mercury API token, Autessa Accounting syncs your accounts and cards every 15 minutes, issues virtual cards, changes limits, freezes cards, pays bills by ACH, check or wire, and writes your category and note back to Mercury. The token is kept only in Accounting’s Mercury tools; Accounting stores just its last four characters.
Do I need Mercury to use Autessa Accounting?
No. Skipping Mercury is a first-class choice: track cards from any bank and upload CSV, Excel or PDF statements. Everything else, review, budgets, ledger, reconciliation, close and reports, works the same. Tracked cards are watched and alerted on, but only the issuing bank can block a charge.
Is it real double-entry accounting?
Yes. Every transaction writes at least two ledger lines that balance, on a chart of accounts with assets, liabilities, equity, revenue and expenses. A posted entry is never edited or deleted; corrections are reversing entries that stay visible, and closed months can only be corrected that way.
How does Autessa Accounting categorize transactions?
In a fixed order, cheapest first: the card’s own department, project and default category, then your merchant rules, then a suggestion from Autessa’s AI. Suggestions are never applied on their own. A person approves every row, and confirming a category can write a rule so that merchant is coded automatically after that.
Can it stop a department from overspending?
Yes, on Mercury cards. Every 15 minutes Accounting compares each department’s card spend with its monthly budget. Past budget it can notify, lower each Mercury card’s limit to what is left, or freeze the cards, and it undoes those changes when a new month starts or the budget is raised.
Can I give an AI agent its own card?
Yes. Agent cards are small, single-purpose cards with an accountable owner, a limit (Accounting suggests $100 a month and warns above $500), allowed merchants, a per-charge cap and an expiry date. A charge outside the rules raises an alert on Home and can freeze the card.
Which financial reports are included?
All the core financial statements and the reports a startup runs on: profit and loss, balance sheet, cash flow (indirect method), department and budget variance, burn and runway, spend by category, trial balance, A/R aging and A/P aging. Reports export to CSV, and project profit is shown under Projects.
How does Autessa Accounting work with payroll and taxes?
It works alongside your payroll provider and tax preparer. Autessa Accounting keeps the books, manages spend and produces the reports your accountant or tax preparer needs, including 1099 tracking on vendors.
Does Autessa Accounting work out of the box?
Yes. It ships with a startup chart of accounts, categories and a guided setup, so you can connect Mercury or upload a statement and start coding transactions on day one. Then shape it to how your company works: extend the chart of accounts and categories, write merchant rules, set departments, budgets and guardrails, and, because it runs in Autessa, tailor its workflows, AI agents and look on the same platform.
Who on my team can use it?
Anyone with an Autessa sign-in that an administrator adds. Roles add up: Bookkeeper, Accountant, Controller and Admin. Everyone else sees Home, the cards they hold, their own card requests, reports and help.
