Scanned document and image redaction

Autessa Redact can redact scanned documents and images. Scanned PDFs and photos (PNG, JPG, TIFF, BMP, GIF, WebP and HEIC) are prepared as page-accurate PDFs and their page image is read, so the text on them can be searched, selected and suggested. Boxes found on the page image are flagged so you can double-check them.

The problem

The scan that a text search cannot see

Faxes, signed forms and phone photos of documents have no real text, so search and copy-paste find nothing. Redact reads the image so you can work on a scan the same way as a typed document, and tells you which boxes came from the image.

  • Upload scanned PDFs or images; each becomes a document to redact.
  • Text on the page image is read so Find, selection and AI suggestions work on it.
  • Boxes read from the page image are labeled “read from the page image, double-check the box covers it”.
  • AI suggestions found on the page image are labeled “spotted by AI on the page image”.
  • Area boxes cover anything the reading missed, such as handwriting or stamps.
  • The burned PDF is flattened and gets a searchable text layer from what is left.

How it works

How does scanned document and image redaction work in Autessa Redact?

  1. Upload the scan

Drop in a scanned PDF or a photo. Redact prepares it, usually in under a minute.

  2. Search or suggest

Use Find, patterns or Suggest redactions as on any other file.

  3. Double-check image boxes

Boxes from the page image are flagged; zoom in and adjust their edges if needed.

  4. Cover the rest

Draw boxes over handwriting, signatures or stamps.

How AI helps here

Suggest redactions works on scanned pages too. Suggestions found on the page image say so, so the reviewer knows to check their edges closely.

FAQ

Questions about scanned document and image redaction

Can I redact a scanned PDF?

Yes. Redact reads the page image so you can search, select and get AI suggestions on a scan. Boxes found this way are flagged so you can confirm they cover the text.

Can I redact a photo?

Yes. Upload a PNG, JPG, TIFF, BMP, GIF, WebP or HEIC image. It opens as a one-page document, and the redacted copy is saved as a PDF.

What about handwriting?

Draw a box over it. Area boxes remove anything inside them, whether or not it was read as text.
