Self-updating screenshots

THE PROBLEM

Screenshots go stale the week after you take them

Every redesign makes a library of guides wrong. Teams re-shoot screenshots by hand, or more often never do. In Autodocs, running the workflow is how the pictures stay true.

Each time a workflow runs, Autodocs re-shoots its steps and refreshes the pictures in every doc written from it, highlights included.

How it works

How does self-updating screenshots work in Autodocs?

  1. 1

    The workflow runs

On demand, on a schedule or as a check.

  2. 2

    Each step is re-shot

The run captures a new screenshot and element box for every step.

  3. 3

    Docs written from it update

In the background, every doc written from that workflow gets the new pictures, highlights redrawn.

  4. 4

    The doc says when

“Pictures refreshed from the last run on …” appears on the doc, with any steps that changed.

Refund a damaged order

Use this when a customer reports a damaged item. It takes about a minute in the payments portal.

4. Click Refund.

FAQ

Self-updating screenshots: questions

Can a how-to guide update its own screenshots?

Yes. Each time the workflow behind an Autodocs guide runs, it re-shoots every step and refreshes the guide’s pictures, highlights included.

Do I have to run the workflow for screenshots to update?

Yes, a run is what re-shoots them. Running it on a schedule from an Autobot keeps guides current without anyone thinking about it.

Does it change my text?

No. Only the pictures refresh. Steps where the site changed are listed so you can review the wording, and an Autessa agent can email them to the guide’s owner when you ask it to.

Try self-updating screenshots on a task you do every week.

Record it once in Autodocs. You get the guide for your team and the workflow for next time.
