Voice roleplay with AI characters
Autessa Roleplay runs live voice roleplay: the trainee speaks out loud with an AI character who answers in a natural voice, stays in character, and can be interrupted mid-sentence like a real person on a call. It is AI sales roleplay and conversation practice that sounds like the real thing, not a quiz.
The problem it solves
Reading about a hard conversation is not the same as having one
People learn objection handling, discovery and difficult feedback by saying the words out loud, under a little pressure, to someone who pushes back. Practicing with a manager does not scale and practicing with a script does not talk back. A voice roleplay gives every trainee a patient, consistent partner who sounds real and is available whenever they are.
What you get
- A live, two-way voice call in the browser: the trainee talks, the character talks back.
- Full-duplex audio, so the trainee can cut the character off mid-reply and the character stops, just like a real call.
- Character voices to cast from: Ruth and Stephen (natural) and Elizabeth and Grant (expressive).
- A loud, simple turn signal: a ring around the character while they speak and one status line ("Listening to you", "Muted, they cannot hear you").
- Live captions of what the character says, so nobody loses the thread.
- Mute, switch to text, or end and score at any time; ending asks "End the session and score it?" first.
- The character is told that call audio can garble names, so it works out what you meant instead of repeating "sorry, I didn't catch that".
- Starting a call in a second tab ends the first, so a trainee never hears two characters at once.
The run-through
How does voice roleplay with AI characters work?
- SCENE 1
Open the exercise
From an assignment, the practice library or a scenario page. The trainee reads the brief and checks their microphone.
- SCENE 2
Start the call
The session is saved before the line opens, so nothing is lost if the browser closes. The call connects and the panel says "Connecting" until it can hear you.
- SCENE 3
Talk
Depending on the scenario, the character opens with its written line after you say hello, or waits for you to open. Speak naturally; interrupt if you need to.
- SCENE 4
End the call
Press End and score, let the clock run out, or let the character close the conversation itself.
- SCENE 5
Get scored
The transcript is collected and scored against the scenario rubric, usually in about a minute. The trainee can wait or leave; the report will be there.
The cue sheet
What shapes a voice session
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Voice | Set on the character: Ruth (female, natural), Stephen (male, natural), Elizabeth (female, expressive) or Grant (male, expressive). |
| Who speaks first | Set on the scenario: the character speaks first with a written opening line, or the trainee opens. |
| Time limit and warning | Set on the scenario, in minutes. 0 means no limit. |
| Pressure mode | Set on the scenario: the character interrupts, pushes harder and gives less ground. |
| Mute | The trainee can mute; the status line says the character cannot hear them. |
| Switch to text | Moves the same session to typing without starting over. |
| End and score | Ends the call after a confirmation and sends it for scoring. |
The cast
Who can do what?
| Who | Can |
|---|---|
| Trainee | Start voice sessions on assigned exercises and on anything in the practice library (needs the practice permission). |
| Coach | Practice like a trainee, and pick the voice of each character they author. |
| Administrator | Everything a coach can do, plus manage who is allowed to practice. |
What the AI does
Behind the scenes
Each character is played by an AI voice agent. The scenario and character you wrote (situation, hidden brief, personality, objections, tells, difficulty, pressure mode, opening line) are handed to the agent for that call, so one voice can play your whole library without building a separate bot per character.

Questions
Questions about voice roleplay with AI characters
Can trainees interrupt the AI character?
Yes. Voice sessions are full-duplex, so the trainee can cut in mid-reply and the character stops speaking. The transcript records what the trainee actually heard.
What voices can the characters use?
Ruth and Stephen, which sound natural, and Elizabeth and Grant, which are more expressive. The voice is chosen per character.
Does the trainee need to install anything?
No. Voice roleplay runs in the browser with the trainee's microphone, after a quick microphone check on the brief.
What happens if the connection drops?
The session is saved before the call starts and the conversation is kept, so it can still be scored. If scoring does not finish, the trainee can try again or open the report anyway.
