Drive on your computer

Autessa Drive works in Finder and File Explorer. The Autessa app for Windows and Mac adds a folder named Autessa Drive, with one folder per drive and a Shared with me folder; files take no space until you open them, and saving in Word, Excel or any app lands in Drive as a new version of the same file, with comments, sharing and history intact.

People live in their desktop apps

Finance edits in Excel, legal in Word, designers in their own tools. A cloud drive that only works in the browser pushes people back to email attachments and local copies.

  • Autessa Drive appears in the File Explorer navigation pane on Windows (at %USERPROFILE%\Autessa Drive) and under Locations in Finder on a Mac.
  • One folder per drive you belong to, plus Shared with me (one per drive when items come from several).
  • Files download when you open them; changes upload by themselves.
  • On Windows, Always keep on this device and Free up space; on a Mac, Download Now and Remove Download.
  • Office saves (temporary file then swap) become a new version of the same file.
  • Temporary files such as ~$Report.docx, .DS_Store and Thumbs.db are kept out of Drive.
  • If someone saved a newer version while you edited, your copy is saved next to it, such as Q3 report (conflict LAPTOP-7 2026-10-27).docx.
  • On Windows, right-click Share… or View in Autessa; files you can only view open read-only.
  • A Drive on this computer card shows Up to date, Syncing, Paused or Offline, with Open folder, Pause, Resume and Turn off.

How does drive on your computer work in Autessa Drive?

    Download the Autessa app

    From On your computer in the drive header, or download.autessa.com. Windows 10 (1809) or later, or macOS 12 or later.

    Sign in

    Drive turns on by itself and appears as Autessa Drive.

    Open and save as usual

    Double-click a file to open it in its usual app; saves upload as new versions.

    Keep files offline

    Choose Always keep on this device (or Download Now) for files you need without internet.

Questions about drive on your computer

Does Autessa Drive have a desktop app?

Yes. The Autessa app for Windows and Mac puts Autessa Drive in File Explorer and Finder, with files on demand and saves that upload as new versions.

Can I use Autessa Drive offline?

Yes, in the Autessa app, for files you have opened or chose to keep on the device. The network drive option needs a connection.

What happens if two people edit the same file?

Nothing is lost. The other person’s version stays in Drive and your copy is saved next to it with your computer’s name and the date.

What happens when I turn it off?

Copies saved on your computer are removed and your files stay in Autessa. On Windows, unfinished uploads move to a folder named Autessa Drive - unsynced files, never deleted.
